Breakthrough Seizures

I had my first seizure in 2008 and the doctors preformed all the test such as EKG, EEG, MRI and Cat scans and everything came back normal so they put me on Keppra XR for 2 years and all was fine untill June of this year i had forgotten to take my medicine for a few days and i had a seizure but i was fine and didnt think anything of it and kept on my regular schedule. Then this Sunday i was in bed around noon when i heard the plow guy plowing are driveway and i had to move my truck so i jumped out of bed ran down stairs and moved my truck out to the street and my dads car, when i got out of the car i started spinning and had another seizure. After i thought about it for a while the last time i took my medicine was thursday morning, so i went 3 days without medicine. I went to the doctor monday and they preformed an EEG and it came back abnormal in the area above my left ear, but thats also the same area where i hit my head on the ground when i fell and i have a big bump there. So my doctor is uping my medicine from 2 a day to 3 a day. What do you guys think? is my medicine working and im only have seizures when i forget?

If you're not consistent with your meds, you're in a mess.

Try to take them at the same time every day – a pill organizer is very helpful.  And put them someplace where they are clearly visible -- your bathroom sink, kitchen table, etc.  Create a daily routine and if you have to take meds in the middle of the day, set the alarm on your watch, clock or cell phone to remind you.

And don't skip a dosage...not to mention 3 days.  (Ok. End of lecture!)   Phylis Feiner Johnson   www.epilepsytalk.com

I think it should be either a standard or a requirement for pharmacists recommend provide a written suggestion every time a person receives something that needs it to be taken at least once if not two or three times a day to use a weekly separation container in order to ensure that person to take their prescribed medicine as prescribed. By using at least one but probably two or even three of these weekly containers.I have three weekly containers, two are for AM doses, one AM is for days I'm home.Another AM is for the days that I'll be at work. They equal 7 days of AM doses. PM doses are all kept in just one weekly container which is divided by Sun,M,T,W,Th,F and Sat.The AMs are divided the same.I'll quickly see that a dose is to be taken. If doses are supposed to be taken from a prescription bottle,it can't be counted each time to check if you'd just took it.It's impossible for that bottle to scream to remind you to take todays dose.

Does your Dr. know that you forgot to take your dose for a few days?  Having breakthrough seizures when you miss a dose is pretty inevitable - you might talk to him/her and ask if you can try staying on the 2/day regime and think of a way that you can keep yourself from forgettting (cell phone alarm, pill organizer, etc.. etc...)

Good luck!
