Driving: Does your doctor tell you if they report your seizures to take your licence?

Tue, 09/07/2010 - 19:50

Hi,

I don't have a drivers licence. I am wondering if the doctor reported me anyway? They ask if I have a licence and when I say no, it's always 'ohhh'.

The reason I am asking is because I don't want to have a record BEFORE I even get a licence!

Will the doctor TELL you if they reported you? Or do they just quietly report you? Will they report you if you don't even have a licence?

Thanks!

In NJ and PA a Doctor must report if a seizure presents itself. In my case I had a grand mal and had a nasty bite on my tongue which was treated with antibiotics.

Based on that evidence hmy GP told me he was reporting me to DVM - no choice. He did state that I had awareness before the episode,(cut me some slack)  so DMV was ok the first time. I am currently being seen by a Neurologist and he reports to my GP whether I am "stable" or not. My GP has taken the responsibility to write intrim reports to DVM for a period of two years which is mandatory.

It's nerve racking, but I have no choice being the bread winner. I do what I have to do, but am careful volunteering too much information to my Neuro. and GP. This is where I see the problem. If the results are a loss of license, people may not report seizures as they should (being totally truthful). As a result you run the risk of personal liability if something bad happens and it is found out that you withheld symptoms.

it's a fine line to walk. However, States should be more accomodating to allow people to come forward and get the proper treatment.

In my state (NC), my doctor said by law they (the hospital) are suppose to report. However, I've been to the ER several times this year and DMV has not been notified.  The Dr. also said I'm suppose to be 6 months seziure-free before driving.  My husband and I have restricted my driving ourselves.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the input, it's much appreciated. I guess my situation is a wee little different?

Cos I don't even have a driving licence to start with! I am just not toooo thrilled that I might have a record before I even decide to get a licence.

I understand if they report me because I have a valid licence, but what happens to people who are of driving age, but aren't legally allowed to because they have no licence?

I gather from the answers that you'd KNOW if you were reported by the doc/hosp etc?

Argh!
