diet pills

Mon, 05/24/2010 - 17:59
Hello, I am new to epilepsy.com and i saw that they have discussion centers. I am a 20 yr old who has had epilepsy since 2000 and am taking medications that cause me to gain weight. I was wondering if any other patients who have this same problem have tried any diet supplements, such as pills or drink mixes, that have worked in relieving some of that weight gain.

From "The Health Network in Australia: "

"Several drugs which were developed for use against depression and epilepsy are showing promise as diet pills, and some doctors already prescribe them for this use, Prozac being the best known example. Topomax is another psychiatric drug now often used off label as a diet pill, and seems to be very effective, but it is important to use these and all prescription diet pills wisely. Always get your doctor's approval before using any diet pills, and ask for regular check ups while you are taking them, in order to diet safely without endangering your health."

In "Weight Loss for All," there's an article about a Zonegran weight loss obesity study:

"Zonegran started as a drug developed for the treatment of epileptic seizures, however during scientific trials, epilepsy patients also began to lose weight. After the zonegran weight loss discovery a separate study was conducted on 60 obese volunteers. Of the 60 volunteers half were put on a low-calorie diet and the other half on a low-calorie diet with a zonegran weight loss pill supplement. After 16 weeks the average weight loss was 13 pounds for patients taking zonegran pills but weight loss only averaged 2 pounds for those not taking the zonegran weight loss pill. Researchers believe the zonegran weight loss pill may have appetite reducing effects.

Mild fatigue has been reported as a common side effect while taking zonegran pills for weight loss. Other side effects reported include dizziness, sleepiness and impaired thoughts. Kidney stones is also a possible side effect but this is said to be rare.

The results from zonegran weight loss drug study are promising and provides some evidence that zonegran diet pills combined with a healthy low calorie diet may be an effective weight loss treatment for obese patients. However more research will be required before obese patients will be able to obtain prescriptions of zonegran weight loss diet pills."

Stay clear of over-the-counter diet pills with lavish promises.  They're often laced with caffeine, a common seizure trigger.

And please!  Review all of this info with your doc and see what he/she says.  If it sounds too good to be true, it may be too good to be true!     Phylis Feiner Johnson   www.epilepsytalk.com
