topamax and weight loss

Fri, 09/15/2006 - 21:59
Has anyone or have someone that experienced that Topamax side effects include weight loss. If so, is there anything being done to gain weight. My Alexia, 16 is underweight and is being teased at school. She weighs 93 pounds (called aneorxia) and I am reassuring her that she is just fine and it is one of the side effects. karen

Not I.  I've been on Topamax for 8 months.  I'm 43 years old, I've been Dx'd for 3-1/2 years.  I am 6 feet 2inches & weighed 245 when I started this med & now weigh 195 pounds.  My weight loss seems to be accelerating lately.  I haven't weighed this little since I was a high school sophomore.

 It's nuts.

Kids are mean, if it's not one thing it's another they always seem to find something to pick on you about.  Just keep an eye on her make sure she's ok and not holding it in.  Maybe you can help her find some clothes that fit and make her look better.  I always shop the clearance to save some money.  My mom told me, when I was 35, she was taking me to Sal's Botique.....It was the Salvation Army...they had some great clothes.

I've been on Topamax for a little over 1 year now for severe migraines.  I'm 46, 5' 101/2" I weighted 185 when I started Topamax and I now weigh 135.  And yes, of course, I lost it in my breasts right away!!!  Why not the stomach or the thighs?  My husband thinks I'm to skinny and likes me the way I was.  Everyone else wants the name of the med because they think I look like a runway model.  Crazy people.  You can have the migraines that go with it to.

At first I had these awful hunger pains they eventually went away and I just never seemed to be hungary but I still make sure I eat and not just 3 meals a day, I eat a lot of fruit, and cereal.  You can also try the meal bars or the drinks they have for kids that don't always eat right, I think they come in chocolate and vanilla.  I went through the same thing with the clothes, it was weird, at first I wasn't losing weight, but my legs and arms were getting really thin and my clothes were falling off of me.

My hands and toes are so numb, I can't stand it, my toes are the worse, my doctor said it's from the high heel boots that I wear..yeah right.  I never had that problem until I started the Topomax.

Has anyone else experienced their toe nails discoloring???  Fungus???  It started right after I started taking Topamax.  I am a woman who likes fashion and open toe shoes during the nice weather, this is disgusting!  Now I'm on another med for the toe nail fungus which could damage my liver so I have to have that checked.

All these side effects were not listed....crazy!!

Hi- I know you posted this almost a year ago, but i just read this and have a question if you don't mind. I recently started Topamax for migraine treatment (almost two weeks ago) and have had almost constant hunger pains. When talking with the neurologist and reading up on it beforehand I didn't see this as a side effect and you are the only other person I have seen mention it. I REALLY don't want to gain any weight and so I am trying to ignore the pains. Do you remember how long they lasted for you? I hope to hear back from you, thanks!
