On Keppra, Baby on the Way

Fri, 02/01/2008 - 19:06

Hi.  I am 23 years old and have been on 2000mg of Keppra a day for over three years.  I have also been seizure free ever since I started Keppra, and with no side effects.  I recently found out that I am pregnant with my first child.  I am ecstatic, but I can't help worrying about the unknown effects of Keppra on my baby.  My neuro is keeping me on the full dose for the duration of my pregnancy.  Other than taking extra good care of myself, does anyone have any advice?  Has anyone else gone through this that has a positive outcome?  A negative one?  I guess I am just searching for some sort of positive reinforcement to put my mind at ease a bit.  Thanks for reading.

Amy

Hi Kelley,

I am on 3000mg of Keppra and 5mg of frizzium.  I am currently 6 weeks pregnant - however to get here I did alot of research in terms of what was the best for me and the potential baby. We started thinking about getting pregnant about 8 months ago...I came up with this decision in consultation with my husband, neurologist and geneticist. The end being to stay on my medication...initially I was going to get off my medication however I changed my mind.  Keppra has stopped me having grand mal seizures...I could not think of anything worse than having one of those when pregnant.  The reality is there is not alot of research into being on Keppra and being pregnant and the impact of the drug latter on the child. I am yet to make a decision about breast feeding however I still have 8 months to come up with an answer. The medication has only been on the market for about 13 or 14 years so there is still a lot more to find out.  Other than feeling very tired I am really hoping all goes well.  I went through the being scared; it is not good however I tried to get as much information as I could to make the best decision for me, my husband and now the baby.

All the best...Maggie

Hi, Can u please help me out. I am 31 and currently on 1750 mg keppra and 10 mg frisium(clobazam). We are planning for a child after I had an MTP done 2.5 yrs back when i was having seizures during my pregnancy(2 in a day). I read that you also were on frisium during pregnancy. Just wanted to know whether you had a healthy baby. Watever I have read till now suggest that keppra is probably the safest drug during pregnancy. But i am more concerned about frisium since I tend to get withdrawal seizures when I have tried to reduce frisium. Will I have healthy baby on my current medications. Pls help.

Hi Nicole! I was taking Lamictal and Keppra when I was pregnant and everything went fine.  As for birth control, my doctor suggested an IUD--it works great (plus I don't have to take any other pill besides my meds!:) Hope this helps, T.
