Can exercise induce seizures?

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 07:00
All the doctors disagree with me because of the research out there but I gave up running last June because I had a seizure while running. I suddenly collapsed, right before I was going to cross a busy street. The doctors argue that aerobic exercise is especially good for epileptics because it normally relieves stress and depression. I agree with this but I want to be safe when getting back into it again. Once I had a small seizure on a bicycle as well. What does everyone else think? Have you had similar experiences?

lI don`t even know if i have epilepsy-was told dystonia may be what I have-I have been to a lot of docs and no answer-however, I can tell you that I always did a lot of fun things before I got like this, swimming, walking, riding my bike, and i find that only sometimes does it lead to whatever I have-for convenience let`s call it a siezure-my problems usually but not always happen after stress of any kind including exercise-sometimes I cannot ride a bike for a long while ,other times it is fine. It is getting worse and the twisting of my neck and the loss of cognition have convinced me to give up swimming. Apparently with a mess of this kind no one can ever say this or that never happens! If it is happening to you then it is-that`s all! I have things at night especially, it is crazy and hard to explain and identify-but I always try to push it a little and do as much as I can-but why do something that is potentially dangerous to you or others, walking is great exercise and when I feel too unsteady to do that I like to use my elliptical machine, because  holding on to something I feel confident there will be no falls. Just don`t give up entirely-there is always someting you can do, and being outdoors and getting fresh air and sun does so much good for the mind as well as the body. I am almost 58 by the way.

My seizures are infrequent so my data is inconclusive but it seems that I am seizure free when I get aerobic exercise at least every other day. I wonder: Can exercise reduce seizures? Aside: I played soccer until my doctor advised that head-ball sports might cause seizures.

I do not agree with that. I am a frequent practiser for the marathon practise and run regularly upto 10KM daily. Also i do gym. Theres no harm in exercising, but it has to be done with care. Eg: my trainer advices a good amount of warm up before u start, and if ur doing a heavy long distance run or workout.Yeah but if u overdo it against ur body, ull face consequences. Make sure to do relaxation exerises for ur mind and body like YOGA. Yoga helps in keeping ur mind calm and being aggresive. I have been doing this for quite some time and my seizure gap has increased from say being once a month to say around once in six months or even once in a year Also it is important that u keep a personal trainer, if u wish he will guide( tell ur health reasons and problems and u luv to exercise etc. ). Hell guide u accordingly. Last important thing whenever u feel uncomfortable stop and rest and then continue. But dont go against ur body.Listen to ur body, when it feels weak, relax or sleep for sumtime. In epilepsy if u go against ur body or force ull face the consequences.
