Can exercise induce seizures?

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 07:00
All the doctors disagree with me because of the research out there but I gave up running last June because I had a seizure while running. I suddenly collapsed, right before I was going to cross a busy street. The doctors argue that aerobic exercise is especially good for epileptics because it normally relieves stress and depression. I agree with this but I want to be safe when getting back into it again. Once I had a small seizure on a bicycle as well. What does everyone else think? Have you had similar experiences?

I don't know if exercise can induce seizures but I am getting well versed in the "drop attacks" of suddenly collapsing.  They are very scary and I too would be a bit anxious about getting out into what could be a dangerous situation, like a busy street or intersection or riding a bike through such.

I know that I'm supposedly not to drive while having seizures that aren't controlled but I'm not certain if it applies to cycling or jogging through traffic.  Yet, I can understand your concern about the possibility of another happening while you are doing it.

I do know that stress, emotional stress, and fatigue/exhaustion can trigger symptoms but... exercise is supposed to relieve those, right?

It could just be that you had a "odd" seizure but hopefully someone here can offer more specific insight.  Just wanted you to know I relate to the "drop attacks" and how disconcerting and scary they are.

I've had 4 seizures since June 2007.  3 happened after softball games and one after a run outside...all during summer months.  I tend to believe that my seizures are triggered by exercise during the summer.  Although my doctor thinks it's coincidence.
