Breakthrough seizure caused by lack of sleep

Sun, 10/12/2008 - 02:58
Due to some of the pressure I am under I do not get enough sleep. Last night was one of those examples where I chose to work extra and it caused me to have a breakthrough seizure after 6 weeks of having no seizures whatsoever. Is it really important to tell my neurologist about this? He will only prescribe more medicine for me or recommend that I have surgery, neither one of which I want. What is the best thing to do?

I think keppra causes you to stay up. I take 4 of those pills a day, I'm 17. I believe this is happening because I already suffered from depression and have epilepsy . You see when I told my doctor I had depression he just ignore me. So now I can't tell if my pills are hurting me when the side effect is depression. I started noticing that my depression gets worse on rainy days like really bad .Make sure your kid isn't feeling depression or stressed at all (that's what will keep him up because he is trying to unstress himself by playing games or being on the phone late at night )and taking Him out as much as you can (:

I don't believe you need to tell the dr. Getting more sleep is the important part, and that's what needs to be worked on. Even meds to sleep for a short time should help reset the clock (which you could get otc). I don't know what meds you're on, so I don't know if any otc meds would interact with you.

A LOT of things cause seizures, especially for us with ep. Lack of sleep, stress (really), lights, music, etc.

Good luck, I hope you have good dreams real soon.

I agree with Diana!  Lack of sleep, STRESS!!!, loss on the stock exchange, forgetting your medication, flickering lights, music etc. can cause a seizure, even a change in food had done it to me, or eating to much sugar and I am not diabetic.  Just something out of the ordinary does it to me once in a blue moon! Try going back to your regular routine for a while and see how you do.  Hopefully getting your rest and getting some appropriate nourishment will do the trick!
