Post Partum Seizures

Tue, 08/01/2006 - 15:49
After I had my first child one year ago Aug. 11th. I was doing good for about a month. And, then a month later I would start to get some seizures every once in a while. They have always been controlled by my meds. But when I do have them they are always when I wake up, all of a sudden, from a deep sleep. Or, when I didn't get enough sleep. Did anyone else have more seizures than normal after they had their baby?

I too have had post partum seizures.  I had never had any siezures before.  My first set of seizures was after I had my son in 1993, I was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia during pregnancy, but other than that uneventful.  10 days after I delievered my son I started having problem breathing almost as if I had pneumonia, my husband took me to the hospital where my blood pressure was very elevated I believe 180/110.  They administered a lung scan thinking I had a pulmonary embolis came back with low probabilty, they then sent me home saying I had a pre-pulmonary infection!  Wow I was to young and didn't think to question them, I remeber leaving the ER crying because I still couldn't breath well and I was scared.  That night around 4 am I woke up in the night with a SPLITTING headache so I got up and took some tylenol, when I got the end of the bed, I could no longer feel my legs.  I called for my husband, he said as soon as he scooped me up to put in bed, I went into a full grand mal seizure lasting for about 5 minutes.  He was scared called 911, I was sent back to the ER in which I had another grand-mal seizure.  I ended up staying 4 nights in the hospital and they never diagnosed me with anything, just put me on seizure medication and took my driving license away for a year.  I was devistated and scared knowing I was  a first time mom and scared I was going to hurt my baby if it happened again.  I remained on seizure medicine for 1 year and then neurologist weaned me off..  I was seizure free until..... I became pregnant again 10 years later with our daughter.  I became pregnant in 2003 for our daughter, doctors thought all would be fine this time around and that we had nothing to worry about, once again I fell for it and listened to them!  During this pregnancy I was diagnosed with "Itchy Mom syndrome" or "cholestatis of pregnancy( medical term).  At 36 weeks my blood pressure started to elevate so they decided to induce labor.  We had a wonderful delievery no problems.  I was released 2 days later with a beautiful little girl.  That night I was walking down my hall and became to feel faint and legs week and once again a splitting headache.  My husband took my blood pressure and once again it was elevated, so he rushed me to the hospital.  When arriving at the hospital I was admitted back on maternity ward and within an 1hour I started to seize another grand-mal seizure!  I guess I had 6 grand mal seizures which left me in the hospital for 11 days.  I was very sick.....  I have since recovered from the trama but, was told to have no more children that I am lucky to be alive!  So I understand all of your stories it is so hard not knowing why this happens and in my case why I get so eclampic with pregnancies.
