Post Partum Seizures

Tue, 08/01/2006 - 15:49
After I had my first child one year ago Aug. 11th. I was doing good for about a month. And, then a month later I would start to get some seizures every once in a while. They have always been controlled by my meds. But when I do have them they are always when I wake up, all of a sudden, from a deep sleep. Or, when I didn't get enough sleep. Did anyone else have more seizures than normal after they had their baby?

Hi. Your story sounds so much like mine. My daughter was born on 5/10/06 (I had an epidural and all else was totally normal during pregnancy, labor and delivery) and then I experienced my first seizure on 7/31/06. I have no history of seizures and there are no seizure disorders in my family. To date I have no explanation for what happened to me. I remember telling my husband that I was exhausted and starving but I could not decide what to eat so I was going to go lay down for a while - this was around 10AM. The next thing I remember is being in the hospital. Apparently my husband could hear what he calls 'the fish out of water breathing' coming from our room upstairs (he is a paramedic) and he came upstairs to find me at the end of my seizure. I was combative with the paramedics that arrived and kept trying to roll over and go back to sleep. I repeatedly told them I was tired and to just leave me alone. I do not remember any of this and when I did start to become aware of my surroundings enough to remember them, I was in the ER with a HORRIBLE headache. I had an MRI and nothing was found. Everything appeared to be normal. I was refered to a local Neurologist who said it was caused by sleep deprivation and had me take Magnesium for a while. (We have since switched doctors) I was fine until 1/23/07 when I had my second seizure. The circumstances were similar to the first - exhausted - but I was at work this time. It was the same time of day, too. I have since been put on Trileptal and am still awaiting a diagnosis. I am now seeing an epileptologist at Rush in Chicago. We were in the process of scheduling a 24 hour VEEG and High Res MRI when I found out I was pregnant with #2. Until he can confirm that there is nothing abnormal in my brain (although all previous EEGs and MRIs have come back normal) he will not let me go off of the meds. And, I'm too scared of having another seizure to stop taking them on my own. He has not diagnosed me as epileptic as of yet and it's just the weirdest thing to have happen. I'm going to insist on blood draws to check my hormones and TH levels after the birth of this baby to see if there could have been another cause of the seizures.
