Dilantin vs Keppra

I am feeling lost. I have been on Dilantin for the past 7 years and have been seizure free. I recently had an EEG and it came back normal. So they decided to take me off the Dilantin. On the third week of being weined off I had a seizure.

Now my Neurologist wants to put me on Keppra. From reading about Keppra it seems like it's not meant for Grand Mal Seizures and thats what I have.

I feel like I am her test subject. Keppra hasn't been around for very long and she is also saying it is better for pregnancy then the Dilantin, but how can she know that when it hasn't been out for very long?

Does anyone have any experience from switching to Keppra from Dilantin or Keppra and pregnancy?

Thank you!

(1) I hope your doctor warned you - - before you began the weaning process - - that it is very common for siezures to occur when weaning off of ANY of the anti-seizure drugs. Perhaps you weren't prepared well enough.

(2) I know several people who have had good experience with Keppra. At the same time, I began on it for 2 weeks, only, and it produced a profound sadness, frequent crying spells, and horrible dreams. 2 week experience is not much to go on. Just know that everyone is different.

Hi JC,

I have experience with Keppra and Grand mal seizures, it actually took my daily grand mal seizures down to only about twice a week if that. It was of great help when it came to my Grand-mal's I am also pregnant and still on it. I take 2000 mgs and have no complications thus far. I don't know much about Dilantin so I can not compare the two I took that when I was a kid, however, I wish you the best of luck! Anymore questions please feel free to contact me. :)
