Cataracts!! What?? In a 3 year old?!

So I am sort of freaking out!! Kaitlyn had her preschool screening a few weeks ago and that included an eye exam. Well I had gotten a letter in the mail saying that she failed her eye exam and needed to be seen by an actual eye doctor. So I decided to wait just a few weeks since we were going through so much with everything with her Epilepsy and a few nights ago my mother in law asked me why Kaitlyn was squinting so much and asked if it was normal. Nic and I looked at her and then looked back through a whole bunch of pictures and realized that she had been squinting for some time in the sun, while watching TV and while trying to read. So I called and scheduled her eye exam and we went today...

They did the first test where you look in the machine and it tells you their prescription. The doctor came in and said that it needed to be done again because there is no way the numbers are right. So we did it again... and yep the numbers were right but they didn't say what it showed at first. So the doctor sat down, looked at her eyes, had her do some various tests and then said that her results were of concern for her. So they dilated her eyes and while we were waiting the doctor said that her right eye was extremely farsighted and that her left eye was pretty farsighted. But since there was such an extreme amount of difference her right eye was starting to stop developing and wasn't focusing anymore (creating the "lazy eye") so they said that we will need glasses for her, she will have to wear them all of the time, and that if in 6 weeks it doesn't start to correct it's self some they will have to patch the left eye (the good eye) and try to fix the bad eye. If it doesn't work then we will have to start to discuss surgery to try and fix that problem as well as therapy...

So just as we were coming to terms with that... the doctor was looking at eyes now after fulling be dilated and started to get flustered and went and got another doctor to look at her eyes. The other doctor came in, looked at her eyes, looked again and looked again... and said that she has cataracts. So now we also have to have the surgery done to have the cataracts corrected. And the kicker to it all.. the eye doctor asked what her seizures looked like and said that maybe part of what we were seeing all along was the eye problem and not actual seizures. So we have wasted thousands of dollars (out of our pocket) and had her medicated for no reason...

Then we were talking about Christopher and they think he has the same problem too, we go back in two weeks to see for sure what his eyes show.

One more thing to add on our never ending list!

HI EMILY, I KNOW YOU ARE BEING OVERLOADED WITH THESE MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND UNDERSTAND SO WELL HOW IT FEELS. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE THOUGH, MAYBE THIS WILL HELP KAITLYN MORE THAN YOU WOULD EVER THINK. MAYBE THAT BEAUTIFUL LITTLE GIRL OF YOURS AND HER BROTHER WILL BENEFIT GREATLY. TRY READING PSALM 91. IT IS FOR PROTECTION AND MORE. I USED TO READ IT FOR MY KIDS ALL THE TIME , SOMETIMES FOR HOURS WITHOUT STOPPING. I HOPE I DIDN'T ALL READY TELL YOU THAT. IT IS A WONDERFUL PRAYER, BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN. ONE PART: HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGLES CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU IN  ALL YOUR WAYS, ETC. ANOTHER: BECAUSE HE LOVES YOU SAYS THE LORD, I WILL RESCUE HIM. I WILL PROTECT HIS FOR HE ACKNOWLEDGES MY NAME, ETC. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I AM NOT TRYING TO PUSH THIS ON YOU, BUT IT IS SO WONDERFUL AND IT HAS HELPED MY CHILDREN WHEN THEY NEEDED HELP. AND ME. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, EMILY.......

I WISH YOU PEACE, LOVE, BLESSINGS, JOY.........JAN

I USE ALL CAPS FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED.

wow!  well if it all turns out to be cataracts..then yay!...even tho you and your family have gone thru so much to reach this point!!  i really hope for all of you, especially kaitlyn and christopher that this is a solution.  i dont understand how it would work that way, but im still learning about all the different types of seizures that there are!

having had eye surgery...get ready for the itchy part, (altho i must admit that i dont recall any of my friends who have had cataract surgery complaining of that)but when my eye was healing...whoo-boy, did it itch...and with a little one you never know...

please keep us updated, maybe this means your list will become just a little bit more managable for you all!!

I know exactly how you feel. When my 10yr old was born her feet where cricked from being pushed up into my ribs. I am small and she was a good sized baby. So we it was suggested that we take her to a specialist to get them straighted out. So over a period of 10 weeks they put 6 sets of casts on her from her toes to hips to resolve the problem (having a new born with casts must have looked odd). After that she wore these special braces, or was supposed to. But they just wouldn't stay on. Then the time came for us to move, change to 2 complete time zones. When we told the doctor about our move and asked who we could go to, to monitor the situation in our new area, his response was more or less, 'well we just wanted to take extra precaution with the situation, they probably would have worked themselves straight on their own anyway'. The entire thing probably cost us 5 thousand.  So yes it is very frustrating, but at least know you are doing the best for your child. I actually almost forgot about it until I read your blog today. Good luck, M

hey mindy!

so that happened with you too?  my daughter was so big that she got all hung up in my ribs, they had to break 2 of my ribs, to get her out and her feet were bent up towards her shins.  i wasnt into the whole cast thing and so i spent a lot of time rubbing and massaging those little feet back into position...and you wouldnt know it had ever happened other than i still have 2 broken ribs..small price to pay from my view.. :)

it's funny the things we go thru as our kids grow and change, it all just sort of compartmentalizes in our brains so that the newer catastrophies can take over!!

we all try the best we can and that's really all we can do, except for love them all no matter what!

HI EM,

MY GOSH, YOU JUST KEEP GETTING MORE AND MORE DIFFERENT DIAGNOSIS!! I MUST SAY THOUGH, IF THE CATERACT SURGERY IS ALL SHE NEEDS TO CORRECT EVERY THING AND LET HER LIVE A NORMAL LIFE, THAT IS A GOD SEND. NO MORE WORRYS ABOUT SEIZURES OR EPILEPSY. I PRAY THAT THE EYE SURGERY WILL CLEAR UP ALL HER MEDICAL PROBLEMS. I KNOW IT IS FRUSTRATING HAVING MEDICATED HER AND SPENT SO MUCH MONEY IF THIS ENDS UP BEING THE PROBLEM ALL A LONG, BUT HIND SIGHT IS ALWAYS 20/20. MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

I TYPE IN CAPS FOR VISUALY IMPAIRED

GOD BLESS,
