My husband Randy has had epilepsy for 22 years. It was fairly well controlled by medication for much of that time.
In 2004, he underwent gastric bypass surgery to lose weight. About 8 months later, he began having breakthrough seizures. They eventually became so frequent that he finally had a grand mal while driving on the freeway and got into a car accident. He has since had so many seizures that he can no longer work or drive and is being evaluated for epilepsy surgery.
It took me a while to put it together, but I finally started to realize that the increase in his seizures was somehow connected to the gastric bypass surgery. I asked the internist at the surgery center what the problem could be. She didn't know of any connection between seizures and gastric bypass and was at a loss. She told Randy to cut his pills in half to help with absorption, which didn't make sense to me because his drug levels were therapeutic. I then asked if he might be metabolizing them more quickly because he had lost so much weight. The doctor said maybe, but she didn't know. Everyone was baffled.
One day, I was at my computer researching epilepsy when it suddenly hit me. I saw something about the ketogenic diet, which requires epileptics to eat very high fat foods that put their bodies in a state of ketosis. For some reason that is not completely understood, this helps reduce or eliminate seizures in these patients.
I began thinking. If you take away the fat from an epileptic, might you not get an INCREASE seizures? It made sense to me.
Gastric bypass surgery eliminates the duodenum from the digestive system, thus getting rid of the part of the intestine that absorbs fat. Randy can no longer absorb fat normally because his duodenum has been bypassed. It's obvious to me that this inability to metabolize fat has lowered his seizure threshold.
I wish someone would do a study on this.
