Audio Interview with Dr. Dan Lowenstein, President of the American Epilepsy Society

Innovations in the Field of Epilepsy

photo of Dr. Lowenstein

Early in 2004, Dr. Dan Lowenstein sat down with epilepsy.com to discuss research and innovations in treatment in the field of epilepsy. Dr. Lowenstein spoke about the promise of new treatments and advances in

surgical options for people living with epilepsy. Furthermore, he discussed changes and advances in the areas of diagnostics and seizure prediction, as well as advances in imaging technology. For patients newly diagnosed, as well as

those living with refractory epilepsy, Dr. Lowenstein discussed the important contributions of new organizations such as Epilepsy Therapy Project, as well as the need for patients to empower themselves with accurate information about epilepsy. Epilepsy.com is proud to present the audio recording of this interview, and invites you to listen and share with others.

Dr. Lowenstein is Professor of Neurology and Director of the UCSF Epilepsy Center. He received his M.D. from Harvard and neurology training at UCSF. After completing a fellowship in molecular biology, he joined the UCSF faculty and established the UCSF Epilepsy Research Laboratory before moving to Harvard. His research has focused on fundamental mechanisms of neuronal network remodeling that occur during epileptogenesis, and the management and treatment of patients with status epilepticus.

Dr. Lowenstein currently chairs the AES Education Council and the Merritt-Putnam Symposium, and is a member of the NINDS Advisory Council. He received an AES/Milken Family Foundation Epilepsy Research Award in 2001.
