Development of a Nasal Form of Diazepam Stopped

Developing ways to stop clusters of seizures or acute repetitive seizures has been an important area of epilepsy research. Acorda Therapeutics, Inc., recently stopped trials of Plumiaz (diazepam or valium) Nasal Spray. This medication was being developed as a rescue therapy that could be sprayed into the nose to help stop seizure clusters quickly. Unfortunately, testing of the intranasal form showed that it was not being absorbed through the lining of the nose as well as rectal diazepam or Diastat AcuDial.
Developing new drugs is a hard and long process with many products not making it through research trials. We thank everyone at Acorda Therapeutics for their efforts to bring a new product to people with epilepsy and for their support of the epilepsy community.
