Teens with Epilepsy - #DareTo Take Control!

Living with seizures poses challenges for all of us. For teenagers, it can be especially hard. It’s the time of your life when you may be trying new things, trying to fit in at school and make new friends, dating, driving, and getting very little sleep or at least your sleep habits are changing. Taking medicines can be hard for teens too. No one wants to take pills in front of their friends. Remembering when to take them can be hard. And, sometimes teens don’t take medicines, because they think they aren’t needed or the pills are seen as a visible reminder of their epilepsy. And who wants to have epilepsy?

Unfortunately, missed medicines, lack of sleep or irregular sleep habits, drinking alcohol, abusing other drugs (prescription or illegal substances), and just not taking care of yourself can make seizures worse. Some of these factors can trigger seizures, or make them more likely to happen. They may also lead to emotional stress that can affect seizures and your overall health.

Listen to Dr. Orrin Devinsky from New York University Epilepsy Center talk about teens taking control.
