Taking Epilepsy Awareness to New Heights

The Epilepsy Foundation congratulates Eric Miller on his amazing feat – reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro! His amazing feat was all about love, compassion and truly raising epilepsy awareness to new heights.

Eric’s wife Carolina passed away as a result of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP) on August 22, 2011. He planned his climb in her honor and in honor of all those living with and lost to epilepsy so that he would reach the mountain’s summit on the two year anniversary of her passing.

Writing on a special Facebook page he created for the climb, Eric described Carolina as the love of his life and an exceptional woman. He goes on to say that Carolina’s “epilepsy was not severe in terms of her seizure frequency; a point that drives me to raise awareness. Far too many have been lost at the hands of epilepsy - WE NEED to do EVERYTHING we can to lessen that number. Hopefully someday, someone else will not experience such a loss.”

Eric also urges, “Help raise awareness and change views about epilepsy. Changing views, changing culture leads to more funding, leads to fewer people feeling lonely, leads to erasing stigmas, and leads to better treatments, cures and saving lives.”
